Before starting a painting, I always do a lot of sketching and drawing, usually from imagination. I feel that using photographs in those first stages limits the spontaneousness of my ideas. Here are some sketches I did for the painting "When the cat is away..." (can be seen in my gallery here on DA).
It is very important to understand animal anatomy in order to make such drawings. Zoos and museums offer wonderful opportunities to study animal anatomy and movement.
